City districts - from the arts to the art of making money
The bank skyscrapers that make Frankfurt's skyline so unmistakable are just one facet of the city. Sachsenhausen has the rustic feel of a village; the Main waterfront is colourful with a wealth of museums; Bornheim, which surrounds the Berger Strasse, is more artistic and unconventional; the city centre combines the medieval, the traditional and the commercial; Ostend is distinguished by its old factory buildings; Bahnhofsviertel (the railway quarter) is known for its now small red light district, but stretches as far as the modern Westhafen; and Westend is resplendent with vintage villas, lots of greenery, the university and a sky scraper every now and then.
Sachsenhausen
- Where? Frankfurt Sachsenhausen stretches south from the banks of the Main to the Stadtwald, or city forest.
- What? "Apple wine" culture, a village-like atmosphere and cobbled pavements around the Grosse Rittergasse; its highest point is the Henning Tower belonging to the old Henning Brewery
Museumsufer (Museum Embankment)
- Where? The area of Sachsenhausen along the river Main. Between the "Eiserner Steg" and "Friedensbruecke" bridges.
- What? Numerous museums. A small selection: Staedel Museum, German Museum of Film, Communications Museum, Museum of Applied Arts, Liebighaus and many more.
Bornheim
- Where? Located in the north east of the city. To the south is the zoo, to the north it is bordered by the A661 motorway or the Seckbach district (its extent is somewhat disputed), to the west, Nordend / Friedberger Landstrasse, and to the east, Ostend.
- What? Bohemian flair around Berger Strasse and Sandweg. Lots of cafés and restaurants. Well-kept villa facades.
City Centre
- Where? Right at the heart of things. Surrounded by gardens that follow the lines of the ancient city walls. This district centres around the Roemerberg.
- What? Timber framed houses on the Roemerberg, shopping in Goethestrasse, the famous skyscrapers of the banking quarter such as the Commerzbank Tower, art and culture in the Schirn Kunsthalle art gallery or the Alte Oper (Old Opera House), historic buildings such as the Paulskirche (St. Paul's Church) and the Cathedral.
Ostend
- Where? From the city centre towards the sunrise (east). South of Bornheim. Hanauer Landstrasse runs right through the district.
- What? Old factory buildings and warehouses line up along the Hanauer Landstrasse. Today you'll find car and furniture showrooms there. And some of the city's best clubs, such as the Cocoon Club.
Bahnhofsviertel (Railway Quarter)
- Where? As the name indicates, around Frankfurt's main railway station. West of the city centre, from Westhafen on the banks of the Main to Mainzer Landstrasse.
- What? The city's red light district. The exhibition centre around the Messeturm (Trade Fair Tower) and the new Hall 3. The reinvigorated quarter around the old wharves in Westhafen with the circular Westhafen Tower.
Westend
- Where? North west of the city centre.
- What? Grueneburg Park (formerly part of the Rothschild Estate) with the Palmengarten botanic gardens. Campus of the Goethe University Frankfurt around the IG Farben building. High-rise buildings spilling over from the banking quarter compete with elegant villas.
